Strip Pieced Interwoven Star Quilt

Sunday 28th April & 26th May – Afternoons

2 Afternoons – 28/4/24 and 26/5/24   2pm – 4:30pm

Tutor – Catriona Brown

The first thing that needs to be said about this quilt is that it’s a lot easier than it looks! I’ve been working on this pattern for a while and come up with a method that really simplifies things. Strips are Foundation Paper Pieced onto A3 sheets, 3 different shapes are then cut out of the sheets and assembled into triangles. The triangles are much easier to join together than expected as having started with foundation paper piecing makes them very accurate. You do not need to be an expert quilter to get a great result with this quilt!

You’ll be expected to come to the class with cut strips (although they don’t need to be super accurate). On the first afternoon we’ll start piecing our strips onto the provided paper sheets, this is much easier than full on paper piecing as we’re just adding strips parallel to each other. We’ll then learn how to cut up your fabric covered sheets into different pieced sections. Finally we’ll assemble our triangles. You’ll have 4 weeks of homework time to get all the triangles needed for your chosen quilt size completed. In the second class we’ll work on joining them together into a beautiful interwoven star design. We’ll provide fabric quantity guidance for 3 different sizes of quilt; a 31”x36” baby quilt, a 42”x54” throw quilt and a 62”x72” single bed quilt. You will need to strip piece on 12 sheets of A3 paper for the small quilt, 24 sheets for the medium quilt and 48 for the large quilt.

This is an interesting and different technique that makes a relatively quick and very accurate quilt. Bring your sewing machine, fabric (exact amounts will be sent with your order confirmation), and basic sewing kit. Sewing machines are available on request.

This is a great class for quilters of all levels but you should be familiar with using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat to cut fabric as well as being able to use a sewing machine.
