Quilt Binding – Sunday 8th October – Morning

£30.00

Layering, Quilting & Binding

Sunday 13th March and 10th April – mornings 10.30am – 1.30pm

Tutor – Catriona Brown

This class is for those students who have finished a patchwork top and want to know how to turn that into a quilt. Using demonstrations and sample pieces Catriona will show you how to prepare and baste your quilt top, how to machine and hand quilt and how to finish your quilt with binding and even add hangers.

We should be able to baste your quilt in the class depending on its size and the number of people attending the class. If the quilt you want to work on is for a King Size bed we may need to ask you to practise on a sample piece! The aim is to baste your quilt layers together in the first class and get started on the quilting. You’ll finish the quilting at home and in the second class we’ll look at trimming your quilt and attaching binding.

You should come along to the class with a quilt top as well as backing fabric and wadding at least 4″ wider and taller than the quilt top.

You must be able to use a sewing machine for this class, being able to use a rotary cutter would be helpful but is not essential.

Quilt Binding

Sunday 8th October – Morning 10:30am – 1pm

Tutor – Catriona Brown

This class is for new quilters who have finished a patchwork top and completed their quilting but are now faced with the daunting prospect of binding it! More experienced quilters who struggle with binding may also find the class useful.

We’ll start by covering how to calculate how much binding you need, the differences between single fold and double fold binding, and how much fabric you need to make your length of binding. Well also include take away instruction sheets to help you do these calculations for your next quilt. Using demonstrations and sample pieces Catriona will show you how to cut your binding strips for double fold binding, how to join them and how to press them. We’ll make the binding for the quilt you want to bind but we’ll provide small quilted blocks and binding for you to practise sewing on binding and creating perfect mitred corners. We’ll also have quick discussions and demos of a few extra bits and pieces; how to use single fold binding, when to use bias binding, how to turn a corner that isn’t a right angle etc.

You should finish the class with your binding prepped and a full understanding of how to sew it on.

You should come along to the class with the height and width of the quilt you want to bind and the fabric you want to use to bind it.

You must be able to use a sewing machine for this class, being able to use a rotary cutter is also highly desirable but not absolutely essential.
