Freezer Paper Appliqué

This class will teach you an interesting method of appliqué using hand cut freezer paper templates. Your templates can be reused several times or just used the once, either way you’ll end up with smooth edges and your edges turned under before you stitch your shape down. Your shapes can be sewn down by machine top stitching or hand sewn for an immaculate finish.
We’ll be making a flower in the class although you can use the technique to appliqué a wide variety of shapes. We’ll be aiming to make one 20” block, this can be joined with other blocks to make a quilt or used on its own to make a cushion. There will be options to trace your petal shapes and make them all the same or cut your petals freehand in a more improvisational fashion. We’ll piece your background, cut your templates and start wrapping fabric round your templates on the first morning. At home you’ll wrap your remaining templates in fabric. On the second morning we’ll remove the freezer paper templates, lay out your flowers, and start sewing your petals down. You may have some shapes still to finish sewing down but you’ll be well on your way!
This is an interesting technique that makes for neat appliqué with lovely turned under edges. Bring your sewing machine, fabric (exact amounts will be sent with your order confirmation), and basic sewing kit. Sewing machines are available on request.
This is a great class for quilters of all levels but it would help to be familiar with using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat to cut fabric. You also must be able to use a sewing machine. You will need an iron and ironing board at home to finish your homework.
