Bojagi Translucent Patchwork – Sunday 20th September – Full Day

In this class we’ll look at the Korean patchwork technique of Bojagi (or Pojagi). The name Bojagi actually means wrapping cloth, these have been made in many sizes in Korea for all sorts of purposes for centuries. They are often made out of a single layer of fabric and techniques were developed to join small scraps of fabric together neatly without raw edges showing. The technique that is known as Bojagi internationally is similar to a flat felled seam and is mainly used to create curtains and other hangings to go in windows. When the light shines through the single layers of fabric and much thicker enclosed seams the piecing pattern shows up beautifully.

In the class we’ll make a sample piece using organdie, this is a stiff, acid treated, cotton that bears some resemblance in texture to the traditional Korean ramie fabric but is available for a reasonable price in this country. You can make your sample out of one or many colours. I’ll have some available to buy on the day and will also provide links to places where it can be sourced. It can be used as a small hanging in your window or you can keep adding to it to make something bigger. We’ll look at finishing techniques on the day to enclose the edges, fold the edges or attach a hanging channel to the top. This is a fun improvisational technique where we build up our design organically.

The organdie makes it easier to learn this technique but provides a stiffer fabric, we’ll also look briefly at using other fabrics such as cotton or linen. We can also discuss any larger projects you’d like help planning.
