Beginners Patchwork and Quilting Wednesday 14th October – 4th November

4 Evenings 14/10/20, 21/10/20, 28/10/20 and 04/11/20 7-9pm

Tutor – Catriona Brown

We’ll be doing beginners patchwork and quilting slightly differently from our previous classes as this will be the first time it will be taught by Catriona. We will also be running it over 4 evenings which allows teaching in easy bite sized chunks with time to do some homework in between to catch up if you like to work a little more slowly.

The workshop aims to get you started with all the basics of quiltmaking from cutting to piecing to layering to binding. In order to finish this in a reasonable length of time we’ll be making a 20″ square cushion cover rather than a full size quilt but all the techniques are identical to those you need for a larger project. On the first evening we will have a brief discussion on sewing machines and learn how to cut fabrics using rulers, mats and rotary cutters. We’ll then learn about making half square triangles (a very common and useful quilting technique!) and make the 16 required for the cushion. On the second evening we’ll discuss choosing a quilt layout and everyone will pick a half square triangle pattern they like. We’ll then sew our half square triangles together learning about joining squares as we go. We’ll revise cutting to cut out border fabric strips then sew them on to complete the top. The third evening will be entirely about quilting, how to layer the quilt sandwich and then how to machine and hand quilt. The 4th and final session will have a quick digression on making a simple overlapping cushion back at the start before focussing on how to bind your quilt/cushion.
You will need your sewing machine, a selection of cotton quilting fabric, and some matching or contrasting thread. We will supply the wadding. Detailed fabric requirements will be sent with your order confirmation. If you need advice on choosing fabrics please come in to the shop at some point before the class and we can help you find what you need from our wide selection. We do have some sewing machines that can be borrowed on the day (even with Coronavirus), please email to reserve one.
The class is suitable for complete patchwork novices but some sewing machine experience is necessary. We will not be able to help with sewing machines to the same extent whilst maintaining social distancing so please familiarise yourself with your machine in advance and bring the manual!
