Tutor – Catriona Brown
We are now running Beginners Patchwork and Quilting over 5 evenings which allows teaching in bite sized chunks with time to do some homework in between to catch up if you like to work a little more slowly. This class is quite intense but the multiple shorter sessions keep it manageable!
The workshop aims to get you started with all the basics of quilt making from cutting to piecing to layering to binding. In order to finish this in a reasonable length of time we’ll be making a 20″ square cushion cover rather than a full size quilt but all the techniques are identical to those you need for a larger project. On the first evening we will have a brief discussion on sewing machines and learn how to cut fabrics using rulers, mats and rotary cutters. We’ll then learn about making half square triangles (a very common and useful quilting technique!) and make the 16 required for the cushion. On the second evening we’ll trim our half-square triangles to size. We’ll discuss choosing a quilt layout and everyone will pick a half square triangle pattern they like. We’ll then sew our half square triangles together learning about joining squares as we go. On the third evening we’ll revise cutting and cut out border fabric strips then sew them on to complete the top. We’ll then learn how to layer the quilt sandwich and then how to machine and hand quilt. In the 4th session we will complete any outstanding quilting and trim our cushion front to size. We will then make a simple overlapping cushion back. The 5th and final session will focus on how to bind your quilt/cushion, including making double fold binding and how to sew it on.
You will need your sewing machine, a selection of cotton quilting fabric, and some matching or contrasting thread. We will supply the wadding. Detailed fabric requirements will be sent with your order confirmation. If you need advice on choosing fabrics please come in to the shop at some point before the class and we can help you find what you need from our wide selection. We do have some sewing machines that can be borrowed on the day (even with Coronavirus), please email to reserve one.
The class is suitable for complete patchwork novices but some sewing machine experience is necessary. We will not be able to help with sewing machines to the same extent whilst maintaining social distancing so please familiarise yourself with your machine in advance and bring the manual!
