This taster session will be suitable for complete beginners or as a refresher if you’ve crocheted before.

In this session we will cover the crochet basics.

  • explore and experiment with different ways to hold your hook and yarn
  • learn to make crochet chains and treble stitches
  • make a granny square
  • we will also consider the importance of tension
  • finishing techniques

The iconic granny square can enhance any blanket or garment with beautiful colour and texture, as well as a plethora of other makes. Learning to make a granny square can provide an essential construct of beginners’ crochet.

Remember that in crochet it’s easy to take your work back and start again – relax.

Once you’ve mastered your granny square you can then get creative and consider what project you would like to get started on. Perhaps you’d like to make lots of little granny squares to join or keep going in rounds to make an infinity granny blanket, a bag, a scarf, or maybe you’ve an idea in mind waiting for this mindful little square.

By the end of your workshop, you will also have some understanding of how to follow a pattern, giving you the foundations to build on in the crochet world.

Practice and dedication are essential to learning any new skill and will build and grow confidence. The rhythmic, repetitive nature of granny squares is an ideal way to build the muscle memory required to become a Happy Crocheter.
